County Senior Hurling League
Abbeyside 1-19 De La Salle 1-14
Our senior hurlers began the league with a five point defeat in sunny Abbeyside last Saturday evening. The game was used in the main to look at our younger players and from that point of view it was a worthwhile exercise. We had two senior graded players in action in the first half, only one in the second half and also gave competitive debuts at adult level to two of our minors Luke Flynn and Chris Kong. Abbeyside were always that bit ahead but our lads kept going to the end.
Abbeyside made the better start and led 0-3 to 0-0 after seven minutes. Eddie Barrett opened our account in the eight minute but Abbeyside added two more by the 12th minute. Points from Eoin Madigan, Colm Morris and Mikey Costigan reduced the arrears to the minimum by the 16th minute. Abbbeyside added two further points before Eddie Barrett pointed for us. Abbeyside then pointed twice more either side of a Mikey Costigan free to make it 0-9 to 0-6 after twenty two minutes. We then pointed four times in a row courtesy of Evan Whelan (2) and Mikey Costigan (2) to lead by one before two late Abbeyside points saw them lead 0-11 to 0-10 at half time.
Abbeyside again made the better start, as we hit some poor wides, and they led 0-14 to 0-10 after eleven minutes. James Stone pointed in the 12th minute but Abbeyside then scored 1-3 without reply to lead 1-17 to 0-11 after twenty one minutes. An exchange of points involving Brian Cunningham followed and we then hit 1-2 through a Colm Morris goal and points from Evan Whelan and Brian Cunningham to leave four points in it with three minutes left but Abbeyside had the final say with a point in the 29th minute.
Scorers: Colm Morris 1-1, Mickey Costigan 0-4 (0-2 frees, 0-1 ‘65), Evan Whelan 0-3, Eddie Barrett and Brian Cunningham (frees) 0-2 each, Eoin Madigan and James Stone 0-1 each.

County U-14 Division 2 Football Championship
De La Salle 7-7 Portlaw/Ballyduff 2-1
We started our U-14 football Division 2 campaign with a very difficult assignment away against Portlaw/Ballyduff. Our opponents were hampered when losing one of their key players early on but put in a very spirited battling performance. We goaled early on courtesy of Josh Kelly and debutant Cormac Dawson added two more. However, our spirited opponents also hit two goals and a point. We got a couple of points and another goal to lead by seven at half time. Our opponents battled hard in the second half but a few fortunate scores saw us over the line
