County Senior Hurling Championship
De La Salle 0-21 Ballyduff Upper 1-13
It was a winning return to management for Owen Dunphy as our senior hurlers began the championship with a five point win over Ballyduff Upper in Fraher Field last Sunday. This was a hard fought and sporting game throughout but a better conversion rate of our chances might have ensured a more comfortable afternoon. We started with seven of our U-21 winning team of last year and gave debuts to goalkeeper Shaun O’Brien and Dylan Foley with both acquitting themselves very well. We also had some fine displays from experienced players like John Mullane. It also saw the return to championship action of Michael Doherty after several years in Australia. We now play Dungarvan next Friday in Round 2.
Playing against the wind we began well with early points from Kevin Moran, Jack Fagan and John Mullane. Ballyduff Upper then hit four in a row to lead by the 12th minute. Eddie Meaney equalised in the 14th minute and a minute later it took a brilliant double save by Shaun O’Brien to keep Ballyduff Upper out. Points from John Mullane (2) and Jack Fagan put us three ahead but it was all square again in the 20th minute when Ballyduff Upper goaled. An exchange of points involving John Mullane was followed by five in a row from Shane Ryan including two from play before a late Ballyduff Upper point saw us lead 0-13 to 1-6 at the interval. Ballyduff Upper opened the second half scoring but we then added three in a row from Eddie Meaney and Shane Ryan (2) to make it 0-16 to 1-7 after six minutes. We then lost Kevin Moran to injury which saw the introduction of Shane McNulty. Ballyduff Upper pointed in the 8th minute but Shane Ryan and Jack Fagan replied. Ballyduff Upper then pointed twice but again we replied with points from Dylan Foley and Eoin Madigan to make it 0-20 to 1-10 after eighteen minutes. We then went ten minutes without scoring in a period where Ballyduff Upper pointed twice before an excellent point from Dylan Foley ended our drought. Ballyduff Upper closed the scoring in the 30th minute as we emerged deserving winners.
Scorers: Shane Ryan 0-8 (0-5 frees), John Mullane 0-4, Jack Fagan 0-3, Eddie Meaney and Dylan Foley 0-2 each, Kevin Moran (free) and Eoin Madigan 0-1 each.
