 East Intermediate Hurling Championship

Erins Own 1-13 De La Salle 0-13

Our intermediate hurlers suffered their second defeat of the championship when they went down by a goal to Erins Own in Walsh Park last Wednesday night. Fielding a very young team with eleven players U-21 starting we struggled at times to deal with the physically stronger Erins Own side and even though we were in the game with a chance of a share of the spoils to the end, the points deservedly went to our opponents.
The early exchanges were even enough and points from Brian Cunningham and Cormac McCann saw the sides level after eight minutes. Further points from Cormac McCann and Mikey Costigan either side of two Erins Own points had it all square 0-4 each after seventeen minutes. The game’s decisive moment came in the 20th minute when Erins Own were awarded a free which was then moved to the centre of the goal and it was finished to the net. Erins Own added a point but Brian Cunningham replied in the 27th minute after Cormac McCann was fouled. The last point of the half fell to Erins Own Michael Roche opened the second half scoring but Erins Own replied immediately. Sean Carton pointed but three consecutive points from Erins Own saw them 1-10 to 0-7 after seven minutes. Points from Matthew Barden and Brian Cunningham reduced the arrears. Erins Own replied with a point before an exchange of points involving Brian Cunningham made it 1-12 to 0-10 with ten minutes to go. Fouls on Colm Morris and Thomas Kearney saw Brian Cunningham reduce the arrears to three points with five minutes left. An Erins Own free made it four but another foul on Thomas Kearney made it three again as we entered injury time. A couple of frees led to goal attempts but we were unable to secure the goal we needed.

Scorers: Brian Cunningham 0-7 (0-5 frees), Cormac McCann 0-2, Mikey Costigan, Michael Roche, Sean Carton and Matthew Barden 0-1 each.
