All Ireland Hurling Final
Commiserations to Derek McGrath, Kevin Moran, Jake Dillon, Shane McNulty, Stephen Daniels, Mark Cooney, Fergal O'Brien and the Waterford senior hurlers on their defeat by Galway last Sunday. Even though the dream is over for another year we are very proud of the efforts of our men and the entire panel and backroom staff throughout the year. Congrats to Galway on their victory.
County Minor Hurling Championship
Ballygunner 3-15 De La Salle 1-9
Our minor hurlers were well beaten by the home side in Ballygunner last Friday. This was probably one of our worst performances in this grade for some years in a game in which we were out hurled, out fought and out thought with several of our players struggling with the basics when under pressure. With one game left before the knockout stages it would appear that a lot of soul searching has to be done if we are to have any chance of retaining our county title.
Ballygunner opened the scoring in the second minute but Sam Flynn equalised from a sixty five in the fifth minute. Two minutes later we were ahead when Ciaran Corrigan and Kevin Hennessy combined for Thomas Douglas to finish low to the net. Ballygunner then took control and between the 11th and 22nd minutes hit 2-5 without reply. A foul on Thomas Douglas saw Luke Flynn convert and further points from Thomas Douglas and Sam Flynn raised hopes of a comeback but Ballygunner added two points before the break to lead 2-8 to 1-5. Points either side of a Ballygunner point from Kevin Hennessy and Luke Flynn made it 2-9 to 1-7 after ten minutes but Ballygunner then took over hitting 1-6 without reply between the 11th and 23rd minutes. Two late points from Kevin Hennessy and Sean Carton ended the scoring on a disappointing night.
Scorers: Thomas Douglas 1-1, Luke Flynn 0-3 (0-2 frees), Sam Flynn (0-1 ’65) and Kevin Hennessy 0-2 each, Sean Carton 0-1.
Panel: Donal Carey, Ethan Halloran, Peter Grogan, Eoin Treacy, Sam Flynn, Chris Kong, Ian Condon, Luke Flynn, Sean Carton, Sean Power, Ciaran Corrigan, Eoin McGrath-Butler, Kevin Hennessy, Thomas Douglas, Dylan Finn, Colm Maher, Dan Casey, Eamonn Brosnan, Seaghan Walsh, Conor Giles-Doran, Luke Walsh, Darren Kenneally, Lorcan Dwyer-Sheridan.
East Intermediate Hurling Quarter Final
Ballygunner 2-21 De La Salle 2-19 after extra time
Our intermediate hurlers exited the championship when they were beaten by Ballygunner after extra time after a very good game in Dunhill last Saturday. We trailed at half time 1-9 to 1-7 with a Thomas Douglas goal being the highlight. A second Thomas Douglas goal in the second half brought us level at 2-9 to 1-12 and it finished 2-14 to 1-17 at the end of normal time. A goal chance missed early in extra time proved vital and we trailed 1-20 to 2-16 at half time. Ballygunner goaled early in the second half to go four ahead and try as we could we were unable to come any closer than two points at the finish. Congrats to Ballygunner on their win.
Panel: Donal Carey, Ryan Duke, Kenneth Byrne, Evan Whelan, Lee Wall, Adam Doyle, Oran Keevers, Gavin Coppinger, Sean Carton, Mikey Costigan, Thomas Kearney, Brian Cunningham, Cormac McCann, Thomas Douglas, Eoin Casey, Matthew Barden, Luke Flynn.
Juvenile News
U- 14 Hurling.
Our U-14 hurlers had a mixed week losing to Ballygunner on Monday last on a score of 3-11 to 0-8. This was not as a one sided a result as the score would indicate. While Balygunner came by their scores a little easier than our lads, the main difference between was obviously the three goals. We had three goal chances which we were unlucky not to convert, two in particular brought top saves from the excellent Ballygunner goalkeeper.
The lads got back on track on Wednesday night with a well earned 3-10 to 0-7 win over a very committed Tramore side at Gracedieu. The group stages of this competition are coming to a close and the knockout section will begin shortly.
