East Intermediate Football Semi Final

Bonmahon 1-12 De La Salle 2-6
Our understrength intermediate footballers exited the championship when despite a strong second half fightback we went down to Bonmahon in Kill last Saturday. Given that we pointed a penalty in the first half and hit the underside of the crossbar when trailing by a point we could have won this game but overall Bonmahon’s impressive start proved decisive. On a positive note two minors Donal Carey in goal and Luke Flynn made their first starts at this level joining another minor Eoin McGrath-Butler and all acquitted themselves well.
A poor start when playing against the wind saw us trail by 0-6 to 0-0 after nine minutes. Mitchell Casey opened our account in the 13th minute but Bonmahon replied with a point in the 15th minute and added a goal three minutes later to make it 1-7 to 0-1. The arrival of David Greene helped to strengthen our defence and freed up Kenneth Byrne for his very effective covering role. Mitchell Casey pointed in the 20th minute and he pointed a free three minutes later after he was fouled himself but was out of luck when Stephen Dalton was brought down as his penalty carried over the bar. Just before halftime Bonmahon pointed to see us trail 1-8 to 0-4 at the break.

The second half was slow to get going but we got back in the game in the eight minute when a move began by keeper Donal Carey and involving Luke Flynn, Kenneth Byrne, Lee Hayes and Joey Twomey ended with Mitchell Casey crashing the ball to the roof of the net. Mitchell followed up a minute later with a long range point and in the 16th minute Thomas Kearney pointed to make it 1-8 to 1-6. Frees in the 20t hand 22nd minutes stretched Bonmahon’s lead to four but a minute later Kenneth Byrne, Thomas Kearney and Eoin McGrath-Butler set up Joey Twomey who beat the goalkeeper for our second goal. We were out of luck in our next attack when Peter O’Hagan set up Lee Hayes but his shot came down off the underside of the crossbar and Bonmahon cleared. Late points in the 29th and 32nd minutes saw Bonmahon through to the final.
