Eddie O'Donnell Monumental Works East U-21 Hurling Semi Final Replay
De La Salle 3-9 Passage 0-10
Our U-21 hurlers qualified for a final clash with Ballygunner after a hard fought win over Passage in Dunhill last Sunday. A good first half performance paved the way for our win and even though Passage improved significantly in the second half they were unable to make inroads on the scoreboard as two goals proved vital for us. A fine penalty save by Shaun O’Brien with three minutes of normal time remaining ensured Passage would not mount a late comeback. In fairness to Passage the margin of victory did scant justice to their efforts but we were happy to progress after two tough games. The final is scheduled for next Saturday at 1.45pm at a venue to be confirmed. Please check our social media sites during the week for further information.
Passage opened the scoring in the fourth minute but Sam Flynn equalised three minutes later. Brian Cunningham pointed a free in the eight minute after Sam Flynn was fouled and we goaled two minutes later when Evan Whelan and Eddie Meaney set up Luke Flynn and he finished to the net. Further unanswered points from Brian Cunningham, Evan Whelan (2) and Eddie Meaney had us ahead 1-6 to 0-1 after twenty two minutes. Passage fought back and three frees between the 26th and 28th minutes reduced their arrears. Points from Sam Flynn and Brian Cunningham after Eddie Meaney was fouled stretched our lead before a late Passage free saw us lead 1-8 to 0-5 at half time. Passage began the second half in determined fashion but missed chances before a shot from Eddie Meaney in the fourth minute ended up in the net. Passage responded with two frees in the seventh and eight minutes before a superb move involving Adam Doyle, Shane Ryan, Mikey Costigan, Luke Flynn and Dylan Finn saw James Stone finish to the net in the 13th minute to make it 3-8 to 0-7. Passage fought back and three frees between the 17th and 21st minutes reduced the margin before a Brian Cunningham free in the 23rd minute ended the scoring. Passage had one last chance when they were awarded a penalty in the 27th minute but Shaun O’Brien saved superbly.
