East Intermediate Hurling Championship
De La Salle 1-18 Ballyduff Lower 1-17
An injury time point from Bryan Phelan gave our intermediate hurlers their first win of the campaign after a close and hard fought contest with Ballyduff Lower in Dunhill last Saturday. Considering we had just a bare fifteen players available and we trailed by six points eleven minutes into the second half this was a very good result for what is a young team. It was a game that saw minor player Dylan Finn make his debut at this level having played in the junior game two days earlier.
Ballyduff Lower opened their account in the third minute but we replied with points from Brian Cunningham, Evan Whelan and Bryan Phelan by the eight minute. An exchange of points involving Brian Cunningham followed and Ballyduff Lower then added three points in a row before Dylan Finn levelled matters in the 20th minute. The teams then exchanged two points each with Brian Cunningham accounting for ours before Ballyduff Lower pointed in injury time to lead 0-8 to 0-7 at the break.
Ballyduff Lower began the second half well scoring 1-1 in the first three minutes. Matthew Barden and Brian Cunningham replied for us but Ballyduff Lower came back with two more points of their own. Bryan Phelan pointed but another two Ballyduff Lower points made it 1-13 to 0-10 after eleven minutes. Three Brian Cunningham points reduced the arrears and we were level in the 17th minute when Seaghan Walsh got on the end of Eoin Casey’s delivery to deflect it to the net. Thomas Kearney and Matthew Barden twice put us ahead with Ballyduff Lower equalising before they hit the front in the 24th minute. Brian Cunningham equalised a minute later and Sam Flynn put us ahead with a long range strike. Ballyduff Lower equalised in the 31st minute before Bryan Phelan collected a pass and hit over a magnificent point from his own half. Ballyduff Lower had two chances to equalise but failed to convert them as we held on for the win
