County Senior Hurling Championship Quarter Final

De La Salle 5-17 Mount Sion 1-16

A powerful second half performance by our senior hurlers secured a semi final place when they overcame Mount Sion after a sporting encounter in Walsh Park last Sunday. We now face Abbeyside in a few weeks time.

We opened the scoring with two frees from Shane Ryan before Mount Sion got off the mark in the eight minute. An exchange of points involving Eddie Meaney was followed by Shane Ryan getting the first goal of the game. Mount Sion scored two points either side of a Shane Ryan free before they sent over three excellent side line cuts to level matters 1-4 to 0-7 after sixteen minutes. Eddie Barrett restored our lead but Mount Sion equalised again. Two further points from Cormac McCann and Shane McNulty put us ahead 1-7 to 0-8 at the interval. The second half began with Kevin Moran pointing and Mount Sion replying likewise inside the first minute. Two points from Shane Ryan followed and Mount Sion hit one to make it 1-10 to 0-10 after five minutes. The game was won between the ninth and thirteenth minutes when first Eddie Barrett pointed and then Eddie Meaney caught Paidi Nevin’s delivery and finished low to the net. Jake Dillon hit over from distance and then Eddie Meaney set up Paidi Nevin who sent an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net. Mount Sion to their credit fought back and hit four of the next five points to make it 3-13 to 0-14 after nineteen minutes. However, any lingering doubt was ended when Shane McNulty found Cormac McCann who crashed the ball to the net and Shane Ryan followed up with a point from play. Further points from Shane Ryan (2) and Dean Twomey to two in reply from Mount Sion had it 4-17 to 0-16 after twenty six minutes. Mount Sion goaled from a penalty but the last word went to Thomas Douglas who scored his first championship goal to end the scoring.

East Intermediate Hurling Championship

De La Salle 1-17 Butlerstown 0-16

Our intermediate hurlers qualified for a quarter final place when a good second half performance saw us overcome Butlerstown in a close and entertaining game played in Kill last Saturday. We have been drawn to play Clonea in the quarter final next weekend.

We opened with two points from Bryan Phelan and Evan Whelan pointed in the fourth and ninth minutes but Butlerstown were level by the eleventh minute. Further points were added by Evan Whelan and Kevin Hennessy but Butlerstown replied with a brace of their own before a Gavin Coppinger point from distance had us ahead 0-5 to 0-4 midway through the half. Butlerstown pointed twice to lead for the first time before Sean Carton equalised. Butlerstown dominated the last ten minutes scoring three consecutive points before Evan Whelan replied with one. An injury time point gave Butlerstown a halftime lead of 0-10 to 0-7.

Luke Flynn pointed inside the first minute but Butlerstown replied immediately. We were level by the 11th minute through points from Thomas Kearney (2) and a Brian Cunningham free. A further exchange of points involving Thomas Kearney made it 0-12 each at the three quarters stage and a minute later we struck the vital goal when Brian Cunningham and Thomas Kearney combined for Luke Flynn to finish low to the net. Credit to Butlerstown they fought back and three points within three minutes had it all square 1-12 to 0-15. Sean Carton restored our lead in the 20th minute and further points from Brian Cunningham, Bryan Phelan and Evan Whelan had us four points clear in the 28th minute. Butlerstown reduced the arrears with a point in the first minute of injury time but a late point by Brian Cunningham secured the victory
