- County Hurling Final U-16 Division 2
De La Salle 1-8 Tramore 0-8
Our U-16 hurlers were crowned county champions after their victory in the division 2 final against a determined Tramore side in a cold and windy Kill GAA grounds on Saturday morning. In what were extremely difficult conditions for hurling we prevailed on a scoreline of 1-08 to 0-08. Our lads showed lots of resilience to come from behind and hold out for a determined victory.
We started slowly playing against an extremely strong wind and trailed by 4 points to 1 at half time with Cormac Dawson pointing our only score from a free after the doubled marked Reuben Halloran was fouled. With the wind such a factor, huge credit goes to our players who fought hard to keep Tramore without a goal in the first half led by goalkeeper Darragh Treacy. In such conditions a goal was going to have a huge bearing on the result.
We started the second half very brightly and got that all important goal inside the first two minutes. Full forward Reuben Halloran beat his two markers before passing to the oncoming Alex Keane who slotted to the net. Cormac Dawson put us ahead a minute later for the first time with a pointed free after Jack Twomey was fouled.
It was a lead we wouldn’t relinquish for the remainder of the game. Reuban Halloran followed up with two pointed frees before Tramore struck back with two points of their own. With pressure mounting on our defence and scores hard to come Cormac Dawson scored two huge points from frees inside our own half to stretch our lead back to three. David Ryan followed up with a point from play before Tramore pointed a free to leave just a goal between the teams with five minutes left.
Credit goes to Tramore who fought determinedly against the wind to try get an equalizing goal but our defence held out led by full back Aaron Wymberry.
There was great scenes at the final whistle and when the trophy was presented to team captain Reuben Halloran.
A huge congratulations to our lads who have worked extremely hard all year having also reached the football county final earlier this season and got just rewards for their efforts.
A big thanks to our mentors, players parents and juvenile chairman Paudie Brosnan for their contribution throughout the year.
