TALES FROM LASALLE

The last time I played for De La Salle - Paul O’Neill

Having moved to Mayo over 25 years ago I was resigned to the fact that there would be little or no interest in my short Gaelic football career which culminated in a county minor title victory over Abbeyside back in the mid ‘80s. That final which was the last time I played for De La Salle took place in Dungarvan on a dull Sunday afternoon and was the curtain raiser to the senior final where the Lilywhites of Tramore played Kilrossanty. It’s funny when the memory returns with the help of Wikipedia.

That panel of players were successful at under 14 and under 16 level and the victory in ’85 was our three-in-a-row. I missed out on the under 14 final when I failed to advise Bro. Patrick that I would be moving residence to live with my uncle and aunt while my parents were away on their summer holidays. There were no WhatsApp groups back then and I counted my blessings when I heard that victory was secured without my assistance.

I’m not sure how other members of the team look back on their schoolboy playing career but Patrick Kelly from Kerry was a huge influence on my life and I still remember him fondly when I stumble onto any De La Salle news posted on the various social media platforms. My memory of him was of a no-nonsense trainer who only expected you to do your best and a little bit more when the need arose. That call to action for a little bit more was expressed in his broad Kerry accent at half time in that minor final, with a withering appraisal of our shambolic opening 30 minutes. A poor team performance saw us level pegging against a side that had no business on the same pitch as us.

When the final whistle blew the scoreboard showed double scores and the city boys were champions. The 40th anniversary is around the corner but there will be a tinge of sadness when I meet up with fellow team members. Bro. Patrick died in ’88 and the shock of his passing was only equalled with news that a member of our half back line Oisin Ryan passed away suddenly in 2019. From what I can gather the club continues to be a part of a strong city based GAA community including Mount Sion, Roanmore and Erins Own and has contributed a great deal to the success of the Waterford Senior Hurling team in recent times. The GAA no longer is a part in my life now but I’m always proud to introduce myself as a De La Salle man when the opportunity presents itself.

AGM

Our AGM took place online on Tuesday 14th December at 8.00pm via Microsoft Teams. There will be a synopsis of the Meeting in next week's notes. The Club Chair and all members of the Club Executive would like to thank everyone for their support during the year. We wish you all a Happy Christmas and Healthy 2022 and look forward to seeing you all in 2022. CHRISTMAS DLS BABYDuring the week, we had our youngest DLS Baby. Baby Reggie at only 17 days old also became the Clubs Christmas Baby. Lee Hayes is a football and hurling stalwart of the Club and we lookforward in anticipation to Reggie's playing days. Fiona, Billy, Robyn and Lee were delighted to join Community Committee members Trevor Clooney, Don Lalor, Suzanne Wymberry and Ricky Grogan to receive the 'DLS Baby Pack' of Best Wishes Card, Club Jersey, Car Sticker and of course as it's Christmas week, selection boxes. A huge Congrats to the Hayes family.

Many thanks for all your support to the Club during the year, hugely appreciated. A Happy Christmas to you and your family.
