Eddie O'Donnell Monumental Works East U-21 Hurling Semi Final
De La Salle 2-16 Ballygunner 1-11

Our U-21 hurlers are through to the eastern final after a strong last quarter performance saw us defeat Ballygunner in a game which was a lot harder won than the final scoreline would suggest. There was little between the sides for most of the game though we did miss several chances but goals in the 53rd and 57th minutes secured our final place. We now await the winners of the Mount Sion v Erins Own/Ferrybank semi final which was postponed due to a bereavement in the Ferrybank club.

We had two wides before Ballygunner opened the scoring with two points in the second and third minutes. Man of the match Thomas Douglas opened our account in the fourth minute after good play from Dylan Foley. We were level a minute later when Mikey Costigan collected Jack Fagan’s long free and pointed. Shane Ryan put us ahead in the sixth minute after strong play from Jack Fagan and there was no further score until Ballygunner pointed twice in the 15th and 16th minutes. We were back in front when Thomas Douglas hit over two excellent points in the 18th and 19th minutes but Ballygunner equalised from a free in the 21st minute. Thomas Douglas pointed in the 24th minute after good work from Dylan Foley and Jack Fagan won the resultant puck out and placed Brian Cunningham for a fine point. Two frees in the 26th and 31st minutes for Ballygunner saw the sides go in level 0-7 each at the interval. The first thirteen minutes of the second half saw both sides sharing three points each with ours coming from a Shane Ryan free after a foul on Brian Cunningham and two excellent sideline cuts from Thomas Douglas. Cormac McCann marked his introduction with a fine point in the 14th minute and two minutes later Shane Ryan sent over an excellent point from the sideline. Ballygunner pointed in the 17th minute and Shane Ryan pointed a long range free in the 20th minute after Adam Doyle was fouled to leave us ahead 0-13 to 0-11. Three minutes later came the defining moment when Thomas Douglas and Jack Fagan combined for Cormac McCann to crash the sliotar first time to the roof of the net. Cormac added another fine point in the 25th minute and two minutes later Dylan Foley and Thomas Douglas set Eddie Meaney free and he finished low to the net. A foul on Adam Farrell saw Shane Ryan stretch our lead to but Ballygunner replied with a goal in the 32nd minute. The scoring ended with the returning Michael Roche pointing and the final whistle then sounded.

Scorers: Thomas Douglas 0-6 (0-2 sidelines), Cormac McCann 1-2, Shane Ryan 0-5 (0-3 frees), Eddie Meaney 1-0, Mikey Costigan, Brian Cunningham and Michael Roche 0-1 each.
