East Intermediate Football Championship
De La Salle 1-7 Newtown 1-6
Our intermediate footballers had their first win of the campaign when we came from behind to defeat Newtown in Walsh Park last Saturday. This was a game that could have gone either way with man of the match Seaghan Walsh’s goal six minutes from time proving the decisive score. From our point of view it was another chance to blood some more younger players, in addition to the lads introduced last week, with teenager Sean O’Keeffe and minors Sam Flynn and Aidan Gannon all making impressive debuts.
Newtown opened the scoring in the first minute and we equalised three minutes later when Paddy Kennedy pointed a fee after he was fouled himself. The next score came in the 14th minute when Paddy Kennedy pointed another free when John Mullane was fouled. Newtown levelled immediately before Seaghan Walsh, who was causing problems in the aerial duels, pointed twice in the 17th and 18th minutes. However, Newtown were back in front in the 19th minute when they got in for a goal which was the last score of the half and they led 1-2 to 0-4 at the break.
Newtown stretched their lead in the second minute of the half and we got our first score in the ninth minute when Paddy Kennedy was fouled and he converted the free. Newtown got on top at this stage and added two points to lead 1-5 to 0-5 after twelve minutes. Seaghan Walsh reduced the arrears in the 16th minute and Lee Hayes made it a one point game in the 23rd minute. We were in front a minute later when Seaghan Walsh rose above the defence to finish Paddy Kennedy’s delivery to the net. The last score came in injury time when Newtown were awarded a free but the shot carried over crossbar and the final whistle sounded
Scorers: Seaghan Walsh 1-3, Paddy Kennedy 0-3 (frees), Lee Hayes 0-1.
Panel: Donal Carey, Ryan Duke, Colm Clancy, Sean O’Keeffe, Evan Whelan, Thomas Kearney, David Kennedy, Sean Carton, Kenneth Byrne (captain), John Mullane, Sam Flynn, Aidan Gannon, Matthew Barden, Seaghan Walsh, Paddy Kennedy, Lee Hayes, Dylan Foley, Eddie Meaney, Joey Twomey, David Dennison.
Munster Minor Football Championship
Best of luck to Niall O’Keeffe and the Waterford minor footballers who play Tipperary in Leamybrien this Wednesday.
Sean Roche
We lost another link to our 1958 County senior football championship winning side when full back Sean Roche passed away last week. Sean was a native of Wexford and made a massive contribution in his adopted city in many ways including GAA and politics. He also featured in one of the greatest days for Waterford senior footballers when they shocked Kerry in the Munster championship in 1957. That team was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the county board awards night in January but unfortunately Sean was unable to attend. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Mary and his family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.
Juvenile report
We had two U-11 hurling teams in action this week. One team played both St. Marys and St. Mollerans with a win over St. Marys and defeat at the hands of St. mollerans. Our other U-11 suffered defeat at the hands of Mount Sion after a terrific game. Our U-14 football team saw plenty action this week, defeating Clann na Gael early in the week. They also qualified for the U-14 county Feile final by defeating Roanmore, St. Marys and The Nire. The final of this competition will be played shortly
