Feile Na nGael Connaught 2018 u14 Camogie:

Friday 8th June:

We met up @ Londis Cleaboy @ 9am. After the customary Feile team photo we departed on our long journey up West. We had 2 stops along the way the first in Tipperary town and the second stop just outside Tuam Co. Galway. We checked into Lough Lannagh Village in Castlebar Co. Mayo around 3pm and then travelled out to Westport arriving there at 3.45pm in plenty of time for our first game. Westport Camogie club laid on a fantastic welcome and refreshments for all teams and travelling supporters. It has to be said also that the presence of John Mullane caused no little excitement over the weekend in Westport and Castlebar.

Game 1 in Westport GAA Club @ 5pm:

De La Salle 1-2 Westport (Mayo) 1-2.

(Sarah Reidy 1-0, Alannah McNulty 0-1, Maggie Gostl 0-1)

A good solid start by our girls against a strong Westport side who had won a national Feile title in 2017.

Game 2 in Westport @ 7.15pm:

De La Salle 3-3 Kilworth (Cork) 0-0.

(Sabhbh Cawley 2-1, Alannah McNulty 1-1, Sarah Heery 0-1)

Our girls really came into there own in this game controlling the game running out deserving winners. After this game we headed back to Castlebar Mitchels fantastic clubhouse for some refreshments and to meet & greet with the host families.

Sat 9th June:

An early start with the 1st game against our hosts.

Game 3 in Castlebar Mitchels GAA Club @ 10am.

De La Salle 5-3 Castlebar 0-0.

(Alannah McNulty 5-2, Sabhbh Cawley 0-1)

Our girls played well in this game with our hosts very unlucky not to get on the scoresheet. After this game we watched the Castlebar boys team in action and then headed by bus into the Castlebar town centre for the Feile Parade. All four teams (2 camogie & 2 hurling) followed the band marching through the town centre to be greeted by the good folk of Castlebar. A fantastic occasion for all 4 teams, mentors and supporters to enjoy. We then headed back to the Castlebar clubhouse for some dinner. With 2 wins and a draw from the group stages it meant we topped the group and qualified for the Cup quarter finals. This game was to be played in the Connaught GAA Centre, Bekan, Knock, Co. Mayo against Crumlin of Dublin.

Cup 1/4 Final @ 5pm in the Connaught GAA Centre.

De La Salle 1-3 (6) Crumlin Dublin 0-2.

(Kayleigh Kirby 1-0, Sarah Heery 0-1, Maggie Gostl 0-1, Alannah McNulty 0-1)

This game was played a hectic pace from start to finish with both teams giving there all. This game was nip and tuck all through with the crucial goal scored by us with a couple of minutes to go sending us through to the semi finals. The joy on the girls and supporters faces was a sight to behold bringing back memories of Feile 2012 semi final and Feile 2014 final triumph. The only down side to this victory was the hand injury picked up by Sabhbh meant she was not going to be available for the semi final. We also lost Alex and Emily who had prior commitments for the Sunday.

Sun 10th June:

An early start at 8.15am back at the Castlebar Mitchels clubhouse where we said our farewells to the host families and a 2 hour journey was ahead of us but the girls were in high spirits looking forward to the semi final against Eglish of Tyrone who we defeated in the 2014 Feile final decider.

Cup Semi Final Eglish Tyrone 2-1 (7) De La Salle 0-3 (Alannah McNulty 0-3)

This was another game played at a hectic pace with both teams contesting every ball and play swinging from end to end throughout the game. Trailing at halftime we clawed our way back into the game and had one great chance when trailing by 1-1 to 0-2 to go ahead but the goal bound shot shot was deflected narrowly wide by our opponents defence. Our opponents then went up field and scored a long distance goal the sliotar drifting high into the top corner of the goal. Heartbreak for the girls but the skill, effort, determination and team spirit shown by all 21 girls on the panel was a credit to themselves, their parents/guardians, their club and county. Memories which ye will cherish forever. The great thing about Feile was that in all games 19 of our 21 girls got game time. After a while the spirits were up again and we headed on our journey back home stopping for our final time in Portlaoise. We arrived back home to the Cleaboy at approx 5pm to be meted and greeted by our fantastic supporters many whom would have had travelled up to watch us play over the 3 days. It was much appreciated by the girls and mentors.

Many thanks to our host club Castlebar Mitchels Camogie Club (Edwin & Brian in particular) who looked after our girls and supporters fantastically over the 3 days. We were fed, watered and entertained from start to finish hospitality at its best. A big thank you to our bus driver John Keegan for all his kindness, good humour and patience throughout our Feile journey. Many thanks to all our sponsors for there generosity shown to our camogie club in our fundraising efforts pre Feile. Apologies if I forgot to mention anybody. Roll on qualifying for Feile 2019...

Congrats to our U-14 club girl Caitlin Kelly on winning a bronze medal in her individual kumite at the recent World Karate championships. Caitlin was a big loss to our U-14 Feile squad due to the clash with both events.
