  • John J. Murphy East Junior B Hurling Final

Kilmacthomas 2-13 De La Salle 2-10

Commiserations to our junior hurlers who were beaten by Kilmacthomas in Carriganore last Saturday in this year's final. This was a very well contested and entertaining game where, unfortunately from our point of view, we probably didn’t do enough when wind assisted in the first half and Kilmacthomas emerged deserving winners.

We opened with a point from Stephen Jacob in the first minute. Kilmacthomas replied with two points and Eamonn Fitzgerald then equalised. A brilliant goal from Stephen Jacob after good work by Luke Lalor had us ahead 1-2 to 0-2 with only five minutes played. A minute later Kilmacthomas goaled and they took the lead with a point in the 13th minute and Aidan Gannon equalised in the 17t hminute after a foul on Eamonn Fitzgerald. Kilmacthomas struck a blow in the 21st minute when they got in for a second goal but our reply was strong with a point from James Stone and three from Aidan Gannon after fouls on Lee Hayes and Eamonn Fitzgerald with one from a sixty five also. Kilmacthomas equalised in the 31st minute but we went ahead two minutes later when a long range free from Conor Bohane went all the way to the net. The last score of the half went to Kilmacthomas with a point in the 35th minute to leave us ahead 2-7 to 2-5 at the break.

Kilmacthomas pointed two minutes into the second half and Lee Hayes replied three minutes later. Two further Kilmacthomas points had it level at 2-8 each by the 11th minute. A foul on Stephen Jacob saw Aidan Gannon put us ahead in the 12th minute but again Kilmacthomas equalised two minutes later. Kilmacthomas took the lead in the 22nd minute and Conor O’Toole equalised from a long range free in the 24th minute with what proved to be our last score. Kilmacthomas then hit three points to secure the title.

We congratulate Kilmacthomas on their victory and wish them well in the county final.

We thank our players for their effort and commitment through the year. Thanks also to our managemet team of Alan Fitzgerald, Shane Barry, Lee Casey, Luke Lalor with Micko Casey and Joe Kenny on first aid for their work with this team.

  • Eddie O'Donnell Monumental Works East U-21 Hurling Semi Final

De La Salle 4-6 Clonea 1-14

Our U-21 hurlers began the defence of the Liam O’Donnell Memorial cup with a hard fought and somewhat fortunate victory over Clonea in Walsh Park last Sunday. We played second fiddle for the most of this game and it was only in the last ten minutes or so that we got on top. In truth the game could have been over at half time only for a superb hat trick from team captain Eddie Meaney. We also didn’t help ourselves with four different players missing seven scorable frees during the game. However, credit to our lads for digging deep to produce the win.

Clonea had four points on the board before Thomas Douglas opened our account from a free in the ninth minute after Sam Flynn was fouled. They added three more before Sam Flynn found Eddie Meaney in the 13th minute and he rounded his marker and crashed the sliotar to the net. Sean Carton won the resultant puck out and gave to Cormac McCann who pointed, We then found herself ahead in the 15th minute when Eddie Meaney goaled again to make it 2-2 to 0-7. Clonea took over again and hit five consecutive points before Cormac McCann’s precision pass picked out Eddie Meaney for a cracking goal on the stroke of half time and we trailed 0-12 to 3-2 at the break. The second half was more even but a fifth minute point for Clonea was the only score of the first eighteen minutes. The switch of Thomas Douglas to full forward proved vital as he got on the end of Eddie Meaney’s delivery in the 19th minute to hit a ground stroke to the net and he added two points in the 21st and 25th minutes to make it a three point game. Clonea reduced the arrears in the 27th minute but Thomas Douglas replied two minutes later. A foul on Eddie Meaney saw Aidan Gannon give us a four point lead in the first minute of injury time. Clonea kept trying for a goal and it took some excellent defensive work by Conor Giles Doran to keep them out. They got that goal in the 34th minute when they were awarded a free and it somehow found its way into the bottom corner of the net. Fortunately, the final whistle sounded on the puck out.

The final against either Ballygunner or Mount Sion is expected to take place next Saturday.

Scorers: Eddie Meaney 3-0, Thomas Douglas 1-4 (0-1 free), Cormac McCann and Aidan Gannon (free) 0-1 each.

Panel: Shaun O'Brien, Lorcan Dwyer, Conor Giles-Doran, Darren Kenneally, Ryan Duke Gavin Coppinger, Evan Whelan, Mikey Costigan, Sean Carton, Sam Flynn, Thomas Douglas, Luke Flynn, Eddie Meaney(captain), Michael Roche, Cormac McCann, Dylan Finn, Aidan Gannon, James Stone,  Seaghan Walsh, Jack Hannon, Sean Power, Tom Crotty, Jeff Cahill.
