CAMOGIE COME TRY IT DAY
Our ‘Come Try Me Day’ was a resounding success this weekend with in excess of forty young girls turning up to our Cleaboy Grounds in glorious conditions. Many thanks to Rose, Charlotte, Ita & to the many other helpers on the day for their assistance. Last but not least, to the girls who were fantastic & very well behaved throughout in their pods. Keep practicing girls and look forward to doing it all over again next Sat 22nd May.
COUNTY DUTY
Well Done to Niamh Murphy & Holly Ryan who were on the Waterford Camogie Junior panel against Carlow. The senior hurlers had five DLS players on the panel, Shaun O’ Brien, Jack Fagan, Jake Dillon, Kevin Moran and Shane McNulty for the game v Westmeath. They gave us a close scare with the resilient Keven Moran coming on to score a reassuring point after the Westmeath goal. Unfortunately Jack was given marching orders after a second yellow.
STORIES FROM LA SALLE
We started last week with Jim Keevers telling us about the fantastic U14’s Feile Double in 2003. This week Donal Barron, one of our Juvenile coaches, tells us about his experience starting out with the club up to the present day;
The Journey through De La Salle GAA club
“I was born beneath a star that promised more” is a lyric in Christy Moore’s classic song the Contender about the imperious Irish Boxer Jack Doyle. When it came to hurling linage, the same could be said of myself.
My pedigree was strong given that my late father John remains the only De La Salle man to ever win an All-Ireland but unfortunately as many a buyer of a promising foal has found to their detriment a combination of pedigree and enthusiasm do not necessarily always translate to talent!! My talent for GAA was limited but the enjoyment that I have derived and the friendships that I have garnered have enriched and emboldened my life in a manner that I can only now fully appreciate as an adult. As an aspiring young boy or girl the barometer against which we assess ourselves in sport is invariably the trophies that we accumulate. Training hard and making sacrifices that culminates in sporting success alongside your friends is one of the greatest joys that life can offer us. However, as I approach the winter of my career my advice to those just starting out within our hurling, football and camogie clubs is to enjoy their sport as much as they can. Long after the memories of the elation of success or the desolation of defeat have faded, the bonds of friendship and sporting memories will continue to endure. GAA clubs by their nature represent the best of us in Ireland. They are inclusive, fun and safe environments where all participants are afforded and encouraged to be the best version of themselves that they can be. Some will excel as players, others as administrators and others as coaches. The values inherent in what we represent in De La Salle and embodied by inspirational people like Joe Carton and Eamonn Fitzgerald are values which we can all aspire to and be proud of. As you embark on your own personal journey in De La Salle as a player, parent or volunteer know that you are following in the footsteps of great men and women who have left a rich legacy for us to sustain and enrich for the next generation. I hope your involvement with De La Salle will enlighten your life in the manner that it has mine. Enjoy your journey. DLS Abú.
