Another fantastic turnout of six to eight year olds for our 2nd ‘Come Try Camogie’ day with another session on Sat 29th May at 1130am in our Cleaboy grounds. Well done to the girls, parents, guardians, our own mentors & coaches for their dedication and time once again. New young girls welcome.
COUNTY DUTY
Brianna O’ Regan, Keeley Corbett Barrett, Beth Carton & Abby Flynn were in senior action v Tipperary where a powerful first half performance by Tipp had Waterford chasing the game into the second half. Well Done to Niamh Murphy & Holly Ryan who were on the Waterford Camogie Junior panel against Clare. The senior hurlers had four DLS players on the panel, Shaun O’ Brien, Jack Fagan, Jake Dillon, Kevin Moran with Shane McNulty injured for the game v Limerick. A focused last quarter saw Waterford pull of a great win with Jack Fagan doing his bit with a superb and timely catch and goal.
VOLUNTEERS
On National Volunteering week, thanks to the huge army of volunteers for all the time you give to the Club. We always need volunteers & would you be willing to assist in doing your bit for the Club? With the fantastic numbers playing with De La Salle Camogie & GAA we could do with some extra parents, siblings or Guardians to help out in the following areas; Coach Assistants, Admin support, Training support, First Aid and Refreshment support. If you would like to assist, please send name, contact number & e Mail address with team your juvenile or adult player is associated either by message on social media or e mail to secretary.delasalle.waterford@gaa.ie & we’ll be in touch.
TALES FROM DE LA SALLE
In our third series, Tom O’Leary originally from Kilkenny shares his underage success coaching football no less with the club.
How did a Kilkenny man get involved in football in De la Salle GAA club?
Back in the early eighties I was playing hurling with DLS and alongside me at times was a Kerry man Patrick Kelly. Now you get the picture! Bro Patrick was a teacher in De la Salle College, so he was in prime position to take over the under 14 football team. He asked me to get involved with him and I did. What I was I was going to offer I did not know but Patrick set out our program for training and gave me my instructions and we jelled well together. We must have got things right because we won under 14 and under 16 championship and went on to win the minor championship in 1985. Patrick and myself became the best of friends and I often called in to see his Mam and Dad in Kerry. I also met his brother Seán, and we also became good friends. You might not know but this is the same Seán that went on to become President of the GAA and subsequently elected to the European Parliament in June 2009 for Ireland South. I remember years later introducing Joey Carton to Seán just before he became President of GAA and just before we started our development in Gracedieu. He became a great friend of the club and as you can see from the plaque that hangs on the wall at our clubhouse, he was asked to officially open our new home in Gracedieu in 2017. Hope you enjoyed that little bit of trivia.
