A huge well done to Suzanne, Lisa & Deirdre from the Community Committee who had ‘take away’ refreshments in form of complimentary teas & coffees for the singular parents who stayed while their children trained.

TALES FROM DLS – Michael Cassidy
Both my parents were from Roscommon so you could not say hurling was running through my veins! I was born and raised in Marian Park. I was never too interested in hurling until first year in De La Salle College, when Brother Patrick (RIP) took our class for PE and introduced me to the game. I was paired up with Lenny Doyle, one of the more skilful players, but surprisingly I discovered I was able to hold my own with him.
Encouraged by Brother Patrick and my classmates, I turned up for hurling training in Cleaboy shortly afterwards and never looked back. The club became a focal point during my teenage years. It is only now that I realise the impact the club mentors, including Sonny Walsh (RIP), Davy Duggan, Tom O’Leary and Joey Carton, had - not only on our hurling abilities but also on our social interactions, both on and off the field.
In 1984, Trevor Clooney and myself were collected from Irish college in Ceann Trá outside Dingle by Brother Patrick and brought back to Waterford to play a minor championship match in Walsh Park. On route, Brother Patrick stopped off at his parents’ house outside Killarney, where we experienced real Kerry hospitality. Unfortunately, the match didn’t go our way and we faced a long return journey by train and bus the next day.
Years later, living in Kerry, I got involved in Tralee Parnell’s Hurling club, when my son, Niall, joined the club as an Under 10 player. I progressed as a trainer through the age groups with Niall, but as he is no longer a juvenile, this will be my first-year coaching/managing a team without him being involved.
After the Leaving Cert, I moved to Dublin to go to college and unfortunately drifted away from the De La Salle GAA club but still count several of my former teammates as friends. I had a real sense of nostalgia a couple of years ago when I travelled to the new De La Salle grounds in Grace Dieu to see my son play for Kerry in the Tony Forristal / Sonny Walsh tournament. Thank you to everyone who guided me along the way and the very best of luck for the future to everyone in the club.
