Paudge Morris - The St Stephen’s School Connection
I am looking back on almost 35 years in St Stephen’s school. It brings back many happy memories. Gaelic games were a big part of school life as well as teaching and learning. All boys were encouraged to play sports and all boys were asked to come to Cleaboy after school for training and matches. It was great to see boys improving their skill level as well as enjoying themselves in team sports. The De La Salle Brothers always promoted games with Br Virgilius training ground hurling to boys in the school playground. Hurling in the yard gave boys an interest in playing and it was easy to finish school and go straight out to play matches. The playground was an ideal place to practice with walls surrounding most sides, which meant the sliotar was always on the move. Even at playtime there were at least 7 or 8 soccer matches taking place at the same time using the space between the concrete shelter as goals and the spaces between the metal shelter on the other side. It was no wonder St Stephens lads had good peripheral vision being careful to mind possession of the ball as well as being careful not to crash into another player.
De La Salle Club was closely involved with the school. The club helped to train underage lads in Cleaboy where Michael Greene, Jim Keevers, Br Martin and Br Anselm gave many evenings at matches and training. We had success in under 11 football and under 13 football for many years. All boys looked forward to running out onto Walsh Park having to go through the tunnel first. There was success with hurling in later years as the training and practice were paying dividends. The whole school attended these finals and the atmosphere and singing were tremendous. Peter Galvin, Br Frank, Jerome Fahy and many present teachers have all continued supporting the boys in the playground and on the sporting fields.
With club success at underage and senior level, all in St Stephen’s looked forward to going to matches and seeing the players and management and cups up close on the ardán in school. Of course, there was homework off as well. A special mention about Joey Carton who has been a major link with the school and club. His introduction of hurling coaching to Junior and Senior Infants boys was very rewarding. These boys would then turn up to training on Saturday mornings. The school has a club notice board where all boys can check when the next training session or match was taking place. I know De La Salle Club will continue to improve and prosper. The facilities up in Gracedieu are testament to the hard work and dedication of the club to cater for present and future club members.
