RESULTS
GAA; Our U11 hurlers beat Ballyhale Shamrocks in a challenge match during the week and thanks to Kilkenny All Ireland & All Star Colin Fennelly for some inspirational words after the game. Our Under 12A Football team had a nice win over Ballyduff Lower over the weekend in their first league game. Well Done boys. Our U13 Footballers went down to Gaultier earlier in the week, in Championship, but put in a strong competitive challenge all the way. Great win by our minors 1-19 to 0-04 v Mount Sion in Championship at Mount Sion GAA in very windy & wet conditions. Well Done to our Junior Hurlers on a good result v Passage in the Junior B Hurling Championship DLS 2-22 Passage 0-11.
CAMOGIE;
A huge well done to our Camogie u15 Feile squad who qualified the A final in the WIT Arena Carriganore having won their games R1 DLS 2-5 Tramore 1-5, R2 DLS 3-10 Portlaw 0-1, R3 DLS 2-2 Gailltir 1-3. Whilst we were 1-2 to 0-1 ahead at half time v Tramore, at the final whistle there was only a goal being the difference as we lost out to Tramore. Well done girls & mentors, ye gave it everything and did us so proud. Well done to our u14 girls who came away with a hard earned victory away to Tallow during the week.
BLITZ
Well Done to Mark Douglas & everyone involved in organising the U10 Hurling blitz in Gracedieu over the weekend which saw teams from Ballygunner GAA, Kilmacud Crokes & DLS. Some great skills on display & thanks to coaches, parents & mentors for making the day such an enjoyable success. Our Juvenile Club is kindly supported by St Dominic’s Credit Union.
COUNTY DUTY
Hard Luck to Alannah McNulty in the Minor All Ireland Camogie Quarter Final as Waterford down to Dublin 1-13 to 1-10. Hard luck to Waterford who went down to a strong second half Tipperary performance in the Senior All Ireland Quarter Final. Beth Carton was unable to start due to an ongoing injury and her presence was sorely missed in the game. Well done to Brianna O’ Regan on another consistent performance and a super save in the second half from Orla O’ Dwyer in a one on one situation. Keeley Corbett Barrett had a strong game in defence and Abby Flynn is getting stronger and more threatening to opponents defences in every game as she took two nice points.
TALES FROM LASALLE
Charlotte Brenner & Rose Madigan can be seen coaching and introducing the newbies, often toddlers, to Camogie at least twice a week in Gracedieu or Cleaboy. Charlotte has been involved with the Club over 40 years and in 2008 was involved in setting up the Camogie Club after eighteen years as Secretary of the Adult GAA Club. Charlotte’s late husband Ger was a former Chair of the Club and her five sons played with the Club, with both Stevie & Johnny Brenner playing Inter County with Waterford. Rose looks after the shop in the Club and takes on the mammoth task of the huge Christmas order, each year. Rose’s son Eoin, has also played with the Club and after a spell in Australia, recently returned and lined out in the Intermediate Championship against Fenor, and got on the score board too. In 2019, Charlotte won Ireland’s most inspiring Camogie Coach in a Croke Park head to head with the five-short listed, but is keen to clarify that she was representing all the Coaches not only in DLS but the County as a whole. Normally both girls are shy of publicity, but it was fantastic for the Club and all involved in the Camogie side that Charlotte had achieved such National acclaim and getting Rose into a photograph was an achievement, on itself.
Rose & Charlotte both say ‘starting a Camogie Club was a no brainer when so many talented hurlers were having daughters, just look at John Mullane!’ In addition, Charlotte’s daughter Charlotte had to watch her five brothers play hurling with DLS and then go and play Camogie with another Club. Stepping down as a Secretary after 18 years, Charlotte joined Rose to initiate the formation of a new Camogie Club. They were joined by Joey Carton & Derek Healy who have all been there from the start. The Club started with 30 girls and now the number playing is in the hundreds. Charlotte & Rose have fond memories as the girls won every Championship up through the ages and we have narrowly lost out to winning Senior by a point. With good hurling blood in the Club, we are sure that a Senior title is within our grasp soon. The girls hope that the future will hold stronger numbers as we recruit through the schools and our members and parents and guardians can rest assured that their daughters are in safe hands as Rose & Charlotte teach them the skills and watch their development in the Club.
MINISTERIAL VISIT
We were delighted to welcome Minister of State for Sport, the Gaeltacht & Defence Jack Chambers TD & Minister Mary Butler TD to our Gracedieu Grounds as we started our Saturday GAA & Camogie day. Club Chair Seamus Quirke presented them both with Club sliotars as a memento of their visit.
REFRESHMENTS
Some great shots on social media from Gracedieu as the Community Committee returned after their holibops & ran out of cups, as the complimentary Wednesday refreshments have become so popular. Eddie Barrett & Under the Clock are back with new treats too on Saturday mornings. Make sure you check out their sourdough toasties or fresh bottled mango and strawberry surprise smoothies.
