TALES FROM LA SALLE - Johnny Walsh

I have been a member of the DLS GAA Club for over 35 years. I joined the club in 1983, not long after my father, the late Sonny Walsh, unfortunately passed away while training an underage team in Cleaboy. I always loved training for hurling and football, just as long as we didn’t have to do too many laps of the field. We were beaten in an U14 feile and county hurling final by Lismore, who would also defeat us in the U16 decider. It was thanks to Davy Duggan, Jack Deegan, John Ryan, and our manager Joey Carton (who was like a father figure to me) inspired us and in 1989 we defeated Lismore in the Minor County Final, which was a great achievement as less than 10 years earlier the juvenile section of the club was almost non-existent. I made many lifelong friends from my time on the team.

In 1987, I made my adult debut at the age of 16, playing in goal for our intermediate team along with Noel Dalton in the Bansha Tournament. Goal suited me as I didn’t have to run much, but I could not oust the great Johnny Keane so I played outfield instead. In 1990 we on to win the county intermediate title with over half the previous years’ minor team playing and we achieved senior status which we kept for most years since. We won a Sargent Cup in 1991 and Junior Football the following year, but alas I was more used to getting beat than winning Eastern & County Finals in hurling and football. I played Minor & U-21 for Waterford but DLS was ultimately the most important for me. I gradually moved down the ranks, with my last game being 2 years ago against St. Mollerans in a junior B hurling match but I had to call it a day after receiving a career ending injury while tying my laces. At 48 it was time to hang up my boots and retire.

I’m still involved with the club lotto committee and supporting the club, as one of the proudest days was seeing us win the 2008 Senior Final and going all the way up to Croke Park for the All Ireland Club Final. Seeing players on the team who had been there since I was playing was incredible but most of all, the friendships I have in both De La Salle and the wider GAA community makes me proud to be a De La Salle man.

U20B COUNTY FINAL

Whoever thought we’d be winning two County Finals during the second weekend in December? Like the Minor Girls Saturday, the U20 Hurlers had a tough physical game on their hands in very wet & windy conditions. A great start saw us two points ahead by the first water break. A focused & driven performance in every position inspired a great disciplined team performance to be six points ahead at half time. After half time, St Olivers fought hard to get back into the game with five points apiece by the second water break leaving it 16 points to 10, with us maintaining the six-point gap. After the water break, St Olivers threw everything at the lads physically in chase of a goal that came in the 60th minute but maintaining discipline, focus & control we deservedly finished five points ahead 0-19 to 1-11. Huge Congrats to the players, management team, mentors, and the great supporters in Walsh Park

MINOR B CAMOGIE COUNTY FINAL RESULT. DLS 0-7, Tramore 1-02.

Congrats Girls on great win in very physical game where there was a battle in every position for possession. It was even stevens all the way until the last quarter, where the girls dug deep to make a focused effort to win this game in normal time which paid off with a great win. Well Done girls, management mentors and the fantastic support that travelled to Ferrybank. Hard luck to Tramore.
