OPERATION TRANSFORMATION
On Sunday 16th January, we kicked off a healthy focus for the year with an Operation Transformation Walk supported by Waterford Sports Partnership & Sports Ireland, organised by the Community Committee. There was a 3k & 5Km option with just under a hundred Club members participating. Well Done everyone and huge thanks to Suzanne Wymberry for coordinating, Deirdre Byrne, Pauline O' Neill and Sharon Dillon for providing the light refreshments, Don Lalor, Fran O'Callaghan, Kieran Wymberry & Eddie Mulligan for stewarding and John O' Neill for the fantastic photos. Stay posted on our social media for further updates on more events delayed due to the current pandemic.
GAA
Congrats to the U20 footballers who beat Clan na Gael 3-10 to 1-06 in the Eastern U20B Football Championship Semi Final. Clan na Gael started well taking the two opening points with some good football but after a settling period, the individual skills and fitness of our players came to the fore as we took control and never really looked in danger for the remainder of the game. Daire Treacy was solid in goal with some good distribution whilst Kieran O' Sullivan gave another good corner back performance. Darren Kenneally controlled the half back line with a great physical presence with good support from Daire O Keeffe. Reuban O Halloran was impressive in centre field whilst Ryan McCarthy's good work rate ensured the centre of the field was controlled by DLS. Shane O' Neill made some great probing runs using space and wide play to his advantage with Cormac Dawson and Kieran Kennedy making good attacking runs directly at the defence. All the forwards played well with the Clan na Gael keeper pulling off several fine saves. The lads now face Tramore in the Divisional Final and scorers were Reuben O Halloran 0-4 (2F), Cormac Dawson 0-01, Kieran Kennedy 1-02, Shane O’ Neill 1-01, Conor O Shea 0-02 & Neil Madigan 1-0.

TALES FROM LASALLE - Shane Quinlan
My DLS story started the same as many in the club in St. Stephens School back in the mid-80s, playing football for the school team and attending the Joey Carton hurling school of excellence in the yard during PE. I have some great early memories of winning primary school finals in Scoil Lorcain and Walsh Park alongside childhood friends who continue to be some of my closest pals today.
From Stephens Street I graduated to the hallowed turf of Cleaboy, 2 minutes from where I grew up, where I spent a lot of my teenage years representing the club in both codes. During those years I had the privilege of playing alongside some of the best hurlers & footballers to ever play for the club, and indeed some for our county.
College in Cork and work in Dublin eventually took me away from DLS but I continued to stay involved over the years. While my hurling career was short lived ending after U21 level, John Sheehan ensured I continued to make the journey south to play football for the club up to 2012 until work commitments took me abroad for a few years.
Two fond memories stick out for me in more recent years. Witnessing the Senior Hurling team finally reach the holy grail on that faithful monsoon day in Fraher Field in 2008, the culmination of years of work by club stalwarts such as Brother Virgilius, Joey Carton, Owen Dunphy, Seamus Quirke, the Daltons, the Duggans, the Brenners and many more. Many of the team that day stood beside me in the yard in St. Stephens back in the mid-80s and to see them go on to win 3 county titles, 2 Munsters and represent the club in an All-Ireland in Croke Park over the following years was special.
On the playing side my best memory was finally winning a county medal with John Sheehan’s Junior Footballers in 2012, again alongside some lads I had soldiered with for over 25 years as well as my brother Paul. We had picked up a few eastern titles over the years but to finally win the county in my last year playing for the club was the perfect ending.
While I have lived away from Waterford for over 20 years I continue to stay connected to DLS, with many lifelong friends and former teammates such as Bull Phelan, Mark Douglas, John Mullane, Murt Doyle & Donal Barron working hard to bring through the next generation of hurlers, footballers & camogie stars for the club.
My own 3 kids play for Naomh Olaf GAA club in Sandyford Dublin, a club formed in 1981 with strong connections to the DLS Brothers of the neighbouring St. Benildas School. My former DLS teammate Niall O’Regan is heavily involved in the juvenile development of the club and coaches my son Evan with the U10s. The white & red will always be part of me.
