John J. Murphy East Junior B Hurling Final
Mount Sion 2-16 De La Salle 2-13
Commiserations to our junior B hurlers went down to Mount Sion in the final after an excellent game in Carriganore last Saturday. Both teams put in a huge effort and the teams went into injury time level before Mount Sion finished strongly to secure the title. This was a great effort by our lads considering they lost four players to injury during the campaign and also saw another seven players called up to intermediate. Well done to player/manager Alan Fitzgerald and his selectors Shane Barry and Lee Casey on their efforts and to Joanne Carey for looking after first aid. Congratulations also to Mount Sion on their fine victory.
Mount Sion opened the scoring inside the first minute point and added another in the fourth minute. Christopher Sheehan opened our account in the fifth minute and three minutes later Eamonn Fitzgerald equalised after he was fouled himself. Mount Sion pointed in the ninth minute and two minutes later they got their first goal when a free from distance appeared to be touched into the net. A foul on Eamonn Fitzgerald saw him convert the free in the 12th minute and another exchange of points involving Eamonn Fitzgerald made it 1-4 to 0-3 after sixteen minutes. Mount Sion then hit a purple patch hitting four points to lead by seven after twenty two minutes. We finished the half strongly when Luke Lawlor grabbed a high ball in the 24th minute, turned and brilliantly crashed the ball to the roof of the net. We followed this with an excellent point on the run from Christopher Sheehan and just before the whistle Eamonn Fitzgerald sent over a point that was first signalled wide by an umpire but awarded on the intervention of the linesman to leave our opponents ahead of 1-8 to 1-6 at half time. Mount Sion made a great start to the second half scoring 1-1 in the first three minutes. Eamonn Fitzgerald pointed a free in the fourth minute after Luke Lawlor was fouled but Mount Sion did likewise a minute later. Two fine points from Barry Twomey and Eamonn Fitzgerald reduced the arrears but Mount Sion pointed again in the eight minute. We were right back in the game in the 10th minute when Luke Lawlor got on the end of Eamonn Fitzgerald’s free and doubled the ball to the net. A foul on Christopher Sheehan in the 12th minute saw Eamonn Fitzgerald make it a one point game and it was all square in the 17th minute when Eoin Casey scored from distance. We took the lead for the only time in the 19th minute when Eamonn Fitzgerald pointed after Keith Cooney was fouled. Mount Sion equalised in the 21st minute to make it 2-12 each and there followed a lengthy stoppage when a Mount Sion player picked up a shoulder injury. The game entered injury time still level but Mount Sion pointed in the 31st, 32nd and 33rd minutes to build a three point lead. In the 34th minute Christopher Sheehan’s shot went over the bar but the last score fell to Mount Sion when they converted a free in the 36th minute and the final whistle then sounded.
